Are you Caring for Someone with a Developmental or Intellectual Disability?

February 9, 2016) Are you taking care of a family member or friend with an Intellectual or Developmental Disability (I/DD)? Do you have concerns about Alzheimer’s disease and Dementia? Are you looking for some strategies to help manage your loved one’s behaviors and keep him or her content? Could you use more information to help improve upon your care giving skills and attitude? If so, Spectrum Generations Family Caregiver Support Program is offering an informative session titled: A Caregiver’s Introduction to Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities and Dementia. It will be offered at Spectrum Generations Cohen Center in Hallowell on February 29th from 11:30am – 1:00pm.

There is an increased risk of Alzheimer’s disease in adults with Down syndrome, therefore, many families and caregivers are concerned. Often times, families are unprepared to deal with this diagnosis. In this session, participants will learn what dementia is and how it effects the individual. They will also develop skills on how to interact and communicate with a person with dementia. Furthermore, caregivers will also learn about resources and services available for support.

Thanks to generous funding from the Maine Developmental Disabilities Council, this training is offered at no cost. Pre-registration is required. For more information, or to register, please call Liz at 620-1656. To learn more about Spectrum Generations visit us online at www.spectrumgenerations.org or like us on Facebook.
