Thank you, Peter. I am delighted to join the Kennebec Valley Chamber of Commerce in honoring MaineGeneral Health as your Business of the Year. Chuck Hays and the entire team of expert professionals, caring staff, and dedicated supporters deserve this prestigious recognition. And I want to mention Chuck s predecessor, Scott Bullock. Scott s dedication and commitment to MaineGeneral and the citizens of the Kennebec Valley cannot be overstated.
Chuck and his professional staff are building on Scott s impressive legacy. The story of MaineGeneral began with the establishment of Augusta City Hospital in 1891. It continues 123 years later and in eight Kennebec Valley communities as a story of hard work, compassion, and vision. An inspiring new chapter was written in 2013 with the opening of the new Alfond Center for Health. Whether you work at that marvelous facility, helped build it, or are a resident of the Kennebec Valley, you can share in the pride in what this region has accomplished. This Center is the result of many individuals, businesses, and organizations working together. Thanks to those efforts, the compassionate care that has long been the hallmark of MaineGeneral now has a beautiful new home. The ongoing renovations at the Thayer Center for Health will bring a new level of care and convenience to patients and families in Waterville. I cannot let this moment pass without reflecting on the namesake of the new hospital here in Augusta. Harold Alfond, his family, and the Alfond Foundation have made commitments to health care, education, and youth development that have enriched so many lives. The widespread and generous community support for this new hospital is built on the foundation of that commitment. Chuck said that it is MaineGeneral s vision to become the nation s number-one community health system. Working together, and with the continued support from your community, it is a vision you are well on your way to achieving. Congratulations, Chuck, and to everyone at MaineGeneral Health.
