WE DID IT TOGETHER: CREATING POSITIVE CHANGE WITH TEAMWORK (AND PERSISTANCE)

There is always a sense of pride when achieving a personal goal. But when a community comes together to make something happen, the rewards are immeasurable. Betsy will reflect on the lessons of developing relationships and using teamwork to accomplish meaningful, sustainable change.

Betsy Pohl 17

Betsy Pohl has been Director of Lithgow Public Library in Augusta for 27 years. She has a B.A. in History from Bates College and a Master’s degree in Library and Information Science from Simmons College in Boston. She began her career in the cataloging department of Ladd Library at Bates College. While pursuing her graduate degree Betsy worked as Public Services Librarian at the Social Law Library in Boston, a historic membership institution serving the Massachusetts judiciary and bar. She started her work in public libraries as Head of Technical Services at the Beverly Public Library in Beverly, Massachusetts.

At Lithgow, Betsy has worked closely with her staff, city government, a board of Trustees, the Friends of Lithgow Library and community partners to increase the reach and quality of Augusta’s library services. For 20 years she led the effort to modernize and expand the historically significant library facility. That $11 million project, now complete, revitalized a city landmark and was the result of a true community effort.
