Viles Community Garden

The Viles Arboretum invites anyone who would like to participate in our Community Gardens Program to join us at an organizational and information meeting on April 13th from 4:30 – 5:30. The Arboretum offers a large array of garden plots for raising vegetables, herbs and flowers and the general interest has made this one of the more popular initiatives at the Arboretum. If you or someone you know might like to participate, come to this meeting where everything will be covered and questions answered. It’s also a perfect time to meet others who are previous gardeners or new comers. The meeting will be held in the Visitors Center located at 153 Hospital Street in Augusta.

Our goal is to make plots available for planting by May 15th. We will aim for this date and hope for the best. We now have a tiller for our tractor so it will be much easier for us to till the garden on our own schedule. The following tasks need to be done by May 15th so we will be asking for volunteers to help out.

o Till the garden
o Lay out plots
o Assign names to plots
o Stake and line the entire garden
o Set up water tank and hoses

This program is a great way to learn from others, trade seeds and plants and join in an activity where you meet other gardeners and people from the area. The Arboretum provides watering cans, mulch, water and hoses, some implements and of course the tilled garden plots. We look forward to seeing you soon.
