The Maine State Museum Pops Up with Snow Pond Performance Arts Students in an Historic Celebration of the Iconic Little Black Dress

In a first of its kind pop up exhibit by the Maine State Museum, From Mourning to Evening, will exhibit Maine State Museum memorial and iconic artifacts, rarely seen by the public. Decorative Arts Curator Laurie LaBar will be on site to guide the visitor experience. The talented students of Snow Pond Performance Arts Academy will delight guests with an interpretive dance, fashion plate art that showcases the history of the little black dress, and will create beautiful music to set the stage. Libby Bischof, Professor of History and Director of the Center for Collaboration and Development at the University of Southern Maine, will give an illustrated presentation exploring the sartorial practices of mourning in New England in the nineteenth and early-twentieth centuries. Professor Bischof will highlight traditional mourning customs including hair jewelry, hair wreaths, mourning dresses, and post-mortem photography, with particular emphasis on the culture of mourning during the Victorian era.  

Guests can bid on one of a kind silent auction items. A cash bar will offer unique and signature cocktails dating back to Victorian times. Jennifer Dube, Director of the Friends of the Maine State Museum, shares the cultural partnership will be a celebration to ignite the senses as together we celebrate the history of the little black dress in an inspiring cultural gala for the ages.

Guests are encouraged to celebrate the iconic little black dress and its roots! Attendees are encouraged to come as comfortable, dress in Victorian mourning attire or get out that iconic little black dress! The evening will premiere at Snow Pond Center for the Arts in Sidney, Maine, Saturday, May 5th from 5:30PM-8:30PM.

Proceeds from the event will ensure new programs and collections care initiatives at the Maine State Museum. The Friends of the Maine State Museum collaborate with community and state-wide partners to join resources to educate and bring history to life, and to further efforts to preserve and share Maine’s rich history and heritage through building a broad base of support for the Maine State Museum. This is a unique opportunity for our community, its cultural institutions, and our youth to immerse their talents and energy to create history.
