Maine Huts & Trails: Sustainable Tourism in Maine's High Peaks Region

Carolann Ouellette Photo 3 1In the 40 years since the idea was hatched, Maine Huts & Trails has evolved into much more than a great place for a backcountry adventure. As a non-profit, the organization was an early model of sustainable tourism development and has become a community resource for Maine's High Peaks. This presentation will highlight the definition and principles of sustainable tourism development and provide insight into how  Maine Huts & Trails has followed those.

Carolann Ouellette joined Maine Huts & Trails as Executive Director in January 2017. Her most recent role was director of the Maine Office of Tourism, a position she has held since 2011. Under her leadership, Maine has benefited from multiple years of consistent growth in tourism. A graduate of Cornell University's School of Hotel Administration, Carolann was chef/owner of an award-winning Maine restaurant in Jackman. She has a strong background in outdoor recreation as a former Whitewater Guide and was operations manager for New England Outdoor Center. She also managed the Sugarloaf Inn. In 2015, she was named by Maine Magazine as one of “50 Mainers Boldly Leading Our State.” Carolann has been involved in many organizations over the years including current Skowhegan Savings Bank Board of Directors and Coordinating Team member Maine Woods Consortium as well as past positions including Board Member at Large US Travel Association, Board Chair of Discover New England, Board Chair of Maine Tourism Association, and Grant Advisor Western Mountains Fund, Maine Community Foundation. She enjoys traveling and spending time in the outdoors.
